RYAN O'Keefe says he has spoken to senior teammates and Paul Roos and felt reassured he would be welcome back at the Swans.

O'Keefe said his wish to move back to Melbourne and the failure to facilitate a deal during trade week was now a thing of the past.

The forward has signed a four year contract with the club and says he is comfortable being back in the group despite what he called an "interesting" trade week.

"I spoke to a lot of people like Paul (Roos) and the senior players and they were really happy for me to come back so I wasn't worried at all because I had their reassurance," he said before the club's first official pre-season session on Monday.

There had been trade week speculation O'Keefe, 27, would sign for Carlton or even the premiers Hawthorn but no deal was struck.

In the end, the forward opted not to risk going into the pre-season draft in December and signed a four-year deal with the Swans.

"You set your mind to make a decision and prepare everyone around you that you're going to make that decision then you have to change again. It's fine and I’m ready for the next journey.

"It happened and it was interesting but it's all been done and dusted and now we’re back training and we move onto next season," he said.

And O'Keefe, who booted 23 goals last season and joined the club in 2000, refuted talk that he had signed with the Swans before putting his name up for trade week.

"I hadn't agreed to anything. That is a bit of a miscommunication there. I never accepted a contract and walked out of it.

"But it's all been done now and I've got a new deal with them and I'm happy."

The Victorian-born forward will be on the wrong side of 30 at the end of his current contract, which means he could be a one-club man by the end of his career.

"I don't think anyone would take a 31-year-old," he smiled. "I dare say I'm a Swan forever."

As for the present, O'Keefe said he was just looking at getting through training which began on Monday morning with a 3km run around Lakeside.

"After pre-season I'll assess where I am and make the next step."
