The Swans Reserves travelled to Margaret Donohoe Oval at Queanbeyan to contest the Quade Commemorative Cup.
From the very first bounce it was obvious Queanbeyan had set themselves for this game, and with both sides applying terrific pressure, goals were hard to come by.
With majors from Jonathan Simpkin and Josh Willoughby for the Swans, the scores were locked together at quarter-time.
Whilst goals came easier to both sides in the second quarter, the tempo of the game and the fierceness of the tussle remained high.
With two goals to Nick Davis, and singles to Tim Schmidt, Luke Vogels and Earl Shaw, the Swans went into the major break with their nose in front by just one point.
Queanbeyan continued to play strong, hard football, and by mid-way through the third quarter had a 17-point lead.
The Swans then started to play more direct, running football and late goals to Andrew Ericksen, Simon Phillips and Matt Laidlaw saw the Swans go into the break slightly in front, but with a strong belief they were now playing the team-oriented football needed to continue their run of victories.
Although the Swans superior fitness level was now showing, Queanbeyan continued to press and play hard physical football.
By the final quarter the Swans were reduced to an 18-man squad after Jared Crouch, Stefan Garrubba, Matt Davis and Josh Willoughby could take no further part in the game.
At this stage the ‘Bloods’ culture started to come through, with players now working harder to assist each other and goals from Nick Davis, Ericksen, Schmidt and Phillips, saw the Swans come home with a 27-point victory and retain the Quade Cup.
This week the Swans’ will attempt to continue their winning streak against Eastlake on Saturday 19 August at Manuka Oval at 2.15pm.
