Mitch Morton and Tommy Walsh, who both came to the Swans via last October’s trade week, are set to make their club debuts in the opening round of the Pre-Season Cup.

The Swans have named a 34-man squad for Friday night’s games against St Kilda and Geelong at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium, and as well as Morton and Walsh, Jordan Lockyer, Harry Cunningham and Shane Biggs are all in line to appear in red and white for the first time.

Swans coach John Longmire said Morton and Walsh were likely to line-up in the forward half during the two games, which would give them, and the rest of the team, a chance to play against some quality opposition after a long pre-season.

“(Walsh) won’t play the whole game, because he did miss last week (the Swans intra-club match),” Longmire said. “We want to just give him a taste of it and let him get a run around, and hopefully a few touches.

“We thought that last week here in the intra-club, (Morton) was pretty good. He was really competitive, he played to the structures really well, and picked it up pretty quickly.

“Even though he’s still only young, he’s played a bit of footy and he understands the game pretty well.

“We’ve seen him over the pre-season and we’ve seen the way he goes about his training, and, it’s a bit like Tommy Walsh as well, we’ll get a good chance to look at him under match conditions which is what we’re looking forward to.”

Longmire also said Lockyer and Cunningham would likely get their chance on Friday night.

Lockyer was selected with pick 43 in last year’s AFL Draft and impressed in last week’s intra-club match, while Cunningham, from Turvey Park in Wagga Wagga, has shown good form on the track since his selection in the rookie draft

“They’ll probably play and get an opportunity. (It will be) those boys’ first time to play for the Swans… and we’ll see how they go,” Longmire said.
