The Sydney Swans and GWS Giants face off for the first time of the 2024 AFLW season, with GWS eager to avenge letting victory slip from their hands in their draw against Gold Coast Suns.
The Giants sit 10th on the ladder with one victory, a draw and a loss to their name whilst the Swans are looking to return to the winner’s circle after back-to-back defeats.
The Giants have added a host of players to their team, with former Swan Aliesha Newman confirmed to make her debut in her new colours.
Missing in action will be Nic Barr who was ruled out for the 2024 season with a hamstring injury, while in-form defender Cambridge McCormick is also out with a syndesmosis injury.
During the week, Giants forward Zali Goldsworthy revealed there were a lot of learnings to take out of their draw with the Suns.
“We felt like it was a game that we really were in front for and we should have won,” said Goldsworthy.
“I think it's probably helped us that we didn't take the win. We were able to kind of get some really great learnings while still being able to get two points.”
Goldsworthy admits the loss of Cambridge and Barr to injury has been felt.
“They're obviously huge losses, both on and off the field. But they've come into the club full of positivity and it's going to make ways for some other girls to get a good opportunity.”
Whilst the Giants haven’t focused on it, Goldsworthy says their loss to the Swans in the 2023 season opener hasn’t been forgotten.
“Especially with the W season when you only play them once a year, you kind of sit in it for 12 months.”
The Swans and Giants go head-to-head at Henson Park on Sunday afternoon, first bounce is at 3.05pm.
