NEW SYDNEY Swans recruit Ben McGlynn says he is looking forward to joining the club’s young guns as they build towards another flag tilt.

The former Hawthorn midfielder, who moved north on a three-year deal with the Swans, said the prospect of regular senior football was the clincher.

McGlynn played 44 games in four seasons with the Hawks, but managed just three in the club’s premiership year of 2008.

“You don’t really want to leave the club that gives you a start in the AFL, but opportunity-wise, Sydney offered a great opportunity to play regular senior footy and the security with a three-year deal,” he said on Friday.

“Having the opportunity to play was the main factor. With [Mark] Seaby and [Shane] Mumford coming on, and 'Joey' [Josh] Kennedy as well coming on board, they’ll be good additions to the Sydney Swans.

While the Swans appear set for a period of regeneration after six years of strong on-field performances, McGlynn said he had no regrets about moving clubs.

“Obviously Hawthorn are going to have a good next two or three years, but in terms of playing regular senior footy, Sydney is where I would like to be,” he said.

“Hopefully in the next four to five years, Sydney’s going to be in a rebuild and we’re going to have a tilt at playing finals.”

McGlynn joined several of his new teammates at Centennial Park on Friday morning for a running session and said his initial impressions of his new home were positive.

“The weather’s a lot better and it’s a good environment to train in. The beaches are also a lot better, so I’m looking forward to the move,” he said.

The 24-year-old said his penchant for hard work at the stoppages would suit the Swans’ brand of football.

Having spent his AFL career under Alastair Clarkson, McGlynn said he was keen to see how a different coaching team approached the game.

“Every coach is different. You only ever hear good reports about how 'Roosy' [Paul Roos] and John Longmire go about it so I’m just looking forward to working under them,” he said.

“I spoke to them on the phone a fair bit during trade week and they went about it the right way.”

The full Swans list will resume pre-season training on Monday, November 2.
