Sydney Swans co-captain Jarrad McVeigh was adjudged best on ground and received the maximum amount of votes from coaches John Longmire and James Hird in Saturday’s 44-point win over Essendon at the SCG.

Playing off half-back, McVeigh collected 34 possessions at 73.5% efficiency in the wet conditions, had eight rebound 50s, five inside 50s and five clearances and received a ‘perfect 10’ from the coaches in the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year Award.

The ten votes has seen McVeigh move into the top ten in the Award, with 33 votes – equal with Fremantle’s Nathan Fyfe and Collingwood’s Scott Pendlebury.

Josh Kennedy received the next highest number of votes with eight for his game-high 37 disposals – 20 of which were contested – eight clearances and a crucial last quarter goal in the defeat of Essendon.

Adam Goodes (four votes), Nick Malceski (three) and Kieren Jack (two) were the other Swans players to impress the coaches in the game, while Essendon pair Brent Stanton (two) and Michael Hibberd (one) rounded out the voting.

This weekend’s game between the Sydney Swans and Adelaide will feature five of the current top ten players in the Award’s voting, with Dan Hannebery (third), Jack (equal-fourth) and McVeigh (equal-sixth) set to face Patrick Dangerfield (equal-fourth) and Rory Sloane (fifth).
