The Sydney Swans are pleased to announce that Swans great Dennis Carroll has accepted the position of Welfare and Player Development Manager.

“I am ecstatic that Dennis has agreed to join the Club in what we believe is a critically important role,” General Manager – Football Andrew Ireland said today.

“We think that our welfare system has been a real strength and we want to thank retiring Welfare Consultant Phil Mullen for the job he has done over the past fourteen seasons.

“Dennis’ experience in football and commerce, and his fine character, will make him a first class replacement and we look forward to having him on board at the Swans.”

Originally from the Riverina, Carroll played 219 games for the Swans between 1981 and 1993, kicking 117 goals. He was Club Captain for seven seasons, from 1986 to 1992, during which time he captained the team in 131 games – only Paul Kelly and Bob Skilton have led the Swans on more occasions.

Carroll represented both Victoria and New South Wales in State of Origin Football, and earned All-Australian selection in 1986. He was named in both the Swans Team of the Century and the New South Wales Team of the Century. The Club’s award for the Most Improved Player, which is presented each year at the Club Champion dinner, is named in his honour. Earlier this year, he was inducted into the Swans Hall of Fame.

For the past 20 years, Carroll has been working with City Ford, progressing from a role in sales to Fleet Sales Manager, through to running the business as Dealer Principal. City Ford is the largest Ford new car dealership in Australia and is recognised as one of the iconic dealerships for the Ford motor company.

“It wasn’t an easy decision to leave City Ford given that I have been with them for 20 years,” Carroll said.

“But after a considerable amount of thought and knowing the Swans is where my true passion lies, I decided this role was for me and I genuinely believe I can make a true difference.

“I want to acknowledge Phil Mullen’s efforts during his many years at the Club. He was at the forefront of player welfare and has led the way in that area. He certainly should be congratulated for all he has done for the Club and its players.

“I am very excited with my new direction and the opportunity that this will provide me, and I look forward to working with my new team.”

Carroll will commence his role on Monday October 12.
