Jordan’s journey begins
Jordan Lockyer began his life as a Swan today with a pre-season training session…
Recent recruit, Jordan Lockyer, got his first taste of life as a Swan today when he joined his new teammates for pre-season at Sydney's Lakeside Oval.
The 18-year old, taken by the Swans with pick 43 in last Thursday night’s AFL Draft, completed a whirlwind past four-days when he suited up for training in welcome sunny conditions this morning.
No sooner had Lockyer caught his breath following yesterday’s long trip east from his native Perth than he was again searching for air, this time following a series of three-minute runs which tested the most seasoned players’ endurance.
Following the session, Lockyer told SwansTV about the excitement of his first few days as an AFL player.
“It’s been pretty hectic!” he said. “Getting my name called out on Thursday, then I was pretty much over here on Sunday, and training today - so it’s been pretty full-on.
“It’s been great meeting all the guys and just getting to know everyone.”
Lockyer joined his fellow Western Australian Under 18 teammate, Tom Mitchell, in being drafted to the Swans and hopes their already established friendship will help them settle in to their new Harbour city surrounds
“Obviously Tommy (and I) are great mates,” Lockyer said “He’s a great bloke and hopefully he can show me around and make me feel welcome.”
The welcoming party for Lockyer has gone beyond just those he grew up with, however, with co-captain Adam Goodes extending a warm welcome to the tall defensive prospect.
“He gave me a call on the weekend and he spoke to me today, so it was pretty overwhelming,” Lockyer said.
Lockyer is confident he won’t be overwhelmed by the increased load of an AFL pre-season, revealing he kept himself in good shape over the break between his 2011 season and the draft by training with his local side, West Perth.
He will again be in action this afternoon with the rest of the Swans team in a yoga session and beach recovery at Clovelly Beach, before getting back into skill and weights training tomorrow morning.
