Sydney Swans youngster Tom Papley admits his first season in the AFL has exceeded his own expectations – and the livewire doesn’t want it to slow down anytime soon.
The 19-year-old is fresh from signing a new two-year deal, the contract extension tying him to the red and white until at least the end of 2018.
Recruited with the 16th pick in last year’s Rookie Draft, the crafty goal-kicker and fierce tackler has enjoyed an outstanding season to date.
Following on from an impressive three-goal debut against Collingwood in Round 1, he earned a Rising Star nomination in the wake of his starring role (20 disposals and two goals) in the Swans' 39-point win over West Coast.
He’s averaged 12.1 disposals, 2.6 marks and 3.8 tackles over his 11 games so far and tallied 15 goals which ranks as the Swans’ fourth best individual haul behind Lance Franklin (57), Isaac Heeney (17) and Luke Parker (16).
Despite missing six weeks with shin soreness mid-year, Papley hopes to build on a season which in many ways has delivered so much already but promises so much more.
"To get (the deal) out of the way I can now concentrate on the footy and hopefully finals to come," Papley told SwansTV.
"I just wanted to find my feet at the start of the season. It was a dream come true to play one game of AFL. I've played 11 games now.
"It's a great time for the Club and myself. I'm just looking forward to hopefully playing finals, keep exceeding those expectations and play my role for the side."
Papley's links to the Sydney Swans were already strong.
He's the grandson of former players Max Papley and Jeff Bray who played for South Melbourne during the 1960s.
Max Papley is a Club Champion winner of 59 career games while Bray strung 34 appearances together before returning to South Australia.
Papley's contract extension has strengthened that bloodline even more.
"It's pretty special to be on for another two years at such a great Club and a Club I've barracked for all my life," Papley added.
"Obviously with the family ties there, that made it even more special."
