A five-goal final quarter helped the Swans on their way to a convincing 30-point victory over Gold Coast in Saturday afternoon’s NEAFL clash at Metricon Stadium.
It was a slow start from the Swans, kicking just two goals in the first half before turning around their fortunes after the main break with a ten-goal second half.
Craig Bird, George Hewett and Jordan Foote ensured the Swans won their fair share of ball from the stoppages to give their forwards best chance in front of goal.
Coach Marty Mattner said after the match he was pleased with the way his side was able to work their way back into the game following a lacklustre start.
“We didn’t start very well, our first quarter wasn’t great but then in our second quarter we were able to get some control in the game,” Mattner said.
“We started to play the way we wanted to play but couldn’t convert those opportunities that we were getting.
“The second half was really pleasing, we started to use the ball the way we wanted to and get the score on the board.”
James Rose looked lively all day using his evasive skill and flair to finish the match with 25 disposals and three goals.
Mattner said Rose has shown strong development during the 2015 season.
“Rosey has really improved this year, he has had a good last month but he still has a lot to work on,” Mattner said.
“It was very pleasing to see him do some exciting things out there today.”
Bird finished the match with 39 disposals, Hewett 34 and Foote 21 but more pleasing was Foote’s role on former Swans Nick Malceski.
Foote finished the game with 11 tackles after a strong first half shutting Malceski out of the game and curbing his influence.
“George Hewett started to use his legs really well out of the stoppages and get some clearances,” Mattner said.
“Tom Derickx was really good out of the ruck. Jordan Foote did a really good job, he ran with Nick Malceski in the first half and then did a really good job in the midfield in the second half.”
“We had a lot of guys play really well, especially in the second half when the whole team played really well.”
The Swans NEAFL side will tackle East Lake in Canberra next Saturday afternoon.
