Match Preview: Sydney Swans v Fremantle, Round 10

A look at Sydney's highly anticipated Round 10 clash against Fremantle at Optus Stadium this Saturday night.

The Sydney Swans head west this week for their highly-anticipated Round 10 clash against Fremantle at Optus Stadium on Saturday night.

Coming off a 30-point victory over Collingwood last week, senior coach John Longmire has made just the one change to his side with Dylan Stephens recalled to the side for his third game of the season, replacing Justin McInerney (managed).

Dylan Stephens comes back into the side on the back of a dominant performance in the VFL last weekend where he gathered 37 disposals in the Swans win over Collingwood.

Sydney currently sit sixth on the ladder with six wins and will be looking for back-to-back wins in their lone trip to Western Australia this year.

Fremantle have made two changes for this clash, with defender Luke Ryan and forward Josh Treacy coming in to replace an injured Andy Brayshaw and omitted Taylin Duman.

They enter this clash coming off a 7-point defeat to Essendon and sit just outside the eight in 10th place on the ladder. They have four wins and five losses heading into this weekend’s clash, however will be buoyed by their return home after several weeks on the road.

Bounce down for the clash is at 7:40pm AEST.

Sydney were pipped by just the one point in their 2019 clash however claimed victories in the three clashes before that, at an average of 84-points.

On form, Sydney enter with two wins from their last week games and Fremantle enter the clash off three losses. However the home side is undefeated at home this year.

    KEY QUOTES

    John Longmire

"We need to play a hard, pressure brand of football,"

"Fremantle have a very good midfield, a good mix of experience and youth and are able to hit the scoreboard so we have to make sure we restrict that."

"We have had a number of our younger players have stress related injuries this year and Justin had problems with his back last year so we were advised by our medical department that he needs to have a week off.”

"Dylan's a really good two-way runner and he uses the ball really well so it's good to get him back in. His form last week (in the VFL) was really good, so it's good for him to get reward for that."

Swans pipped by Fremantle in thriller

Vintage Lance Franklin performance not enough to get Sydney home against Fremantle

The Sydney Swans have gone down in a 2-point nailbiter against Fremantle at Optus Stadium on Saturday night in Round 10, with the home side withstanding a Lance Franklin vintage performance.

Franklin booted six goals in a magnificent performance and threatened to steal the match in the final term before Dockers skipper Nat Fyfe buried his goalkicking demons to snap the match-winning goal.

Fremantle held on in the dying minutes, withLuke Ryan spoiling the Swans' last forward entry with 14 second left to seal the 12.14 (86) to 13.6 (84) win, which keeps the Dockers in the top-eight hunt.

The ferocious and high-quality contest swung repeatedly in the second half, with the lead changing four times in the thrilling final term.

It was the desperate Dockers who ended with their noses just in front, taking a top-eight scalp to draw level on points with eighth-placed Richmond and end a three-game losing run.

    07:12

The Dockers addressed their biggest weaknesses, tackling ferociously in attack and converting critical chances, although they still finished with more behinds than goals.

Rory Lobb was outstanding for the home team, booting 4.0 and taking nine marks (four contested), standing tall once key forward Matt Taberner went down with an ankle injury.

As well as kicking the match-winner, Fyfe was dominant in the midfield, finishing with 27 disposals and a game-high 13 clearances – one shy of his career-best 14.

David Mundy (29 and seven clearances) and Michael Walters (23 and a goal) were excellent in a midfield that got the team back in the contest during the third quarter.

Franklin, who booted eight goals in his only other game at Optus Stadium, was in rare touch, kicking three goals in each half, including three from beyond 50m.

    Dead-eye Swans take second-quarter chances

Trailing by two points early in the second quarter, Sydney went on a three-goal run that saw James Rowbottom, Tom Papley and Chad Warner kick brilliant goals that would usually have claims as goal of the match. Rowbottom snapped from 45m on the run when he was in position to handball, Papley converted a right-foot checkside, and Warner broke free in the middle to bounce one through from 60m. The run of half chances was outdone by Franklin, however, who worked Griffin Logue under the ball on the wing, took one bounce as he burst into the corridor, and launched from 60m. The forwards rewarded their midfielders, who won the clearances 15-11 for the term.
