Veteran defender Jarrad McVeigh will be given every opportunity to prove his fitness this week, but Sydney Swans hierarchy declared he's only an outside chance to resume his place in the senior side for Thursday night's clash with the Western Bulldogs.
McVeigh missed the past two games after straining his hamstring against North Melbourne, an injury the former skipper played through to help his side claim the win at Docklands.
He's had a hampered season to date, having dealt with a recurring calf issue prior to Round 7, his first game of the season, before playing a significant role in the Swans' run of three consecutive wins.
It was hoped the bye would give the 32-year-old extra time to recover for this week's clash at the SCG, but Head of Football Tom Harley said with his history of soft-tissue injuries they'll likely take a conservative approach.
"Jarrad has had a wretched run with soft-tissue injuries," Harley said in this week’s HCF Injury Update.
"He's unlikely to play at this stage, we were certainly hopeful with the week off he'd be able to get up in time. We'll know a bit more after the main training session (Tuesday) night but it's looking unlikely at this stage.
"Clearly we don't take any risks with a player like Jarrad ... (while) we acknowledge how frustrating it might be for him but saying that we're tracking in the right direction."
Meanwhile, Kieren Jack (hip) and Sam Naismith (knee) have both recovered from their respective injuries and will be available for selection pending a trouble-free run on Tuesday, alongside Jake Lloyd and Sam Reid who'll remain in the side after overcoming their concussions suffered in the Round 10 loss to Hawthorn.
