Sydney Swans midfield coach Brett Kirk believes Oliver Florent has begun to show a wealth of potential at the heat of the contest.

The young Swan has starred on a wing since donning the red and white at the 2016 AFL Draft, averaging 16.5 disposals per match and treating Sydney fans to a jam-packed highlights reel.

The speedster’s game-clinching goal on the run against the Western Bulldogs in Round 4 last season was exhilarating.

But Florent began to absorb more work at the stoppages in season 2019 – alongside midfield bulls Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker and George Hewett – and Kirk has plenty of faith in the 21-year-old’s future at the coalface.

“He’s becoming quite adept now at playing inside,” Kirk told SwansTV.

“You would have seen over the last month of the season he played more as an inside mid. He gave us some speed, he’s got quick feet and he reacts really well. We love it when he tucks the ball under his arm and takes the game on. We think he can kick some goals for us as an inside mid pushing forward, and we’re really looking forward to seeing what he can do in 2020.”

Florent averaged 19.2 touches (6.4 contested) in his 21 games this year.

Sydney’s 2018 Rising Star produced arguably his best match of the season against Melbourne in Round 4, standing out in his side’s loss with 25 possessions (13 contested), four clearances and two goals to earn a team-high 37 Bob Skilton Medal votes.

Kirk says Florent is blossoming on and off the field.

“He’s really growing – not only with his footy but as a person,” Kirk said.

“He turned 21 this year and we’re loving what he’s doing for our footy club. He fits in really well with the group and he provides great energy.”
