Oliver Florent will experience another key moment in his football apprenticeship on Saturday, playing his first game against the GWS Giants.

The 19-year-old, coming off a breakout game against Port Adelaide last week which included a career-best 20 possessions, will become the 53rd Swans player to represent the club in the Sydney Derby.

Florent will get his first taste of the rivalry between the AFL’s two Sydney-based clubs alongside five Giants players who will run out in a Derby for the first time – Jeremy Finlayson, Daniel Lloyd, Tim Taranto, Harry Himmelberg and Brett Deledio.  This will take the number of GWS Derby players to 65.

At the other end of the scale, Swans Josh Kennedy and Heath Grundy and Giant Callan Ward will continue their unblemished record with their 14th Sydney Derby appearance, having never missed a game between the clubs.

Sam Reid, back into the Sydney side for this week, will play against his GWS namesake for the second time in a Derby after they were opposed for the first time in Round 5 last year.

Overall, the rivalry favors Sydney 9-4 after the teams split the games last year.

The Swans, who won the first four Derbies, broke a three-game Giants streak when they won the last meeting between the teams in 2017 by 13 points.

Ironically, last year both teams prevailed away from home.

Overall, it has gone Swans, Swans, Swans, Swans, Giants, Swans, Swans, Swans, Swans, Giants, Giants, Giants, Swans.

The Swans have a 4-1 record against the Giants at the SCG, are 3-1 against them at Stadium Australia, and it’s 2-2 at the Sydney Showgrounds.

Sydney’s score of 24.27 (171) in Round 16, 2013 remains the highest score in a Derby, and their 129-point margin in the same game the biggest.

The GWS score of 5.7 (37) in the first Derby remains the lowest in games between the clubs, and the biggest crowd for a Derby was 60,222 at Stadium Australia in 2016 in the only final between the two clubs.
