QBE Sydney Swans Academy athletes Joel Cochran and Ellie Veerhuis were awarded the prestigious Frank Burton scholarship this month in recognition of their performance on and off the field.
Frank Burton, a former employee of the Sydney Swans and a member for more than 30 years, left a legacy to the Sydney Swans Foundation to continue financial support for young athletes.
Cochran has enjoyed rapid success in the Top-End Program. In 2023 he was a member of the U17 Futures team – which plays annually ahead of the AFL Grand Final – and kicked two goals for his side. He was also named in the AFL Academy squad which sees 30 of the best talented players in Australia selected to participate in several events throughout 2024.
Speaking to Sydney Swan Media Cochran said the scholarship will not only assist in the development of his football but support his Year 12 studies.
“The scholarship will help with a new pair of boots, a new ball and assist with outside of footy too,” Cochran said.
“I’m trying to achieve a high ATAR so I can attend university after school. [With the Academy] I’m able to keep in touch with both coaches and teachers to manage my timetable with games coming up.
“It means so much to me. I’m so appreciative of the award.”
Veerhuis is also part of the Top-End Program consisting of the best U18 AFL talent in New South Wales. Hailing from the Illawarra region the young athlete travels long distances to train and attend university. She was recognised for not only her skill on the field but continuous dedication.
“I’m very grateful for the Swans Academy to have given me opportunities over the past five years,” she said.
“I’m really thankful for the scholarship and that the [Academy] continue to support me and my development this year. The scholarship will assist in my travel to training and games each week.”
