Aaron Francis is set to play his first AFL game for 2024 this week after senior coach John Longmire was forced to replace Tom McCartin in Round 9.The defender sustained a head knock in Round 8 against GWS and subsequently failed a HIA test.
Francis played 15 games in 2023, making his debut for the Swans in Round 6 against Geelong. He proved to be an important addition to the team in the wake of injury after the swingman was recruited from Essendon at the end of the 2022 season.
For just the sixth time in the top eight era, Round 9 will see all top eight teams play each other. Speaking to Sydney Swans Media Longmire admitted that Fremantle, who sits sixth on the ladder, will be a tough opponent.
"They've obviously been in terrific form." Longmire noted. "They're second-best in defence in the competition, the number one clearance team."
"They're playing some really good footy. So they'll take some beating, I'm sure they're confident. We're looking forward to that contest."
Dane Rampe has also been named in the side after an impressive return to play last week. The versatile defender finished the match with 24 disposals and seven marks to his name after spending four weeks out due to a hamstring injury.
The Swans have enjoyed a strong start to the season with a 7-1 record with Fremantle on home territory a tough ask - even for the most experienced sides.
"We're fortunate to have a great following all over the country," the coach added.
"It's terrific to see so many people wherever we go and it's great to see our Swans supporters over here in Perth that don't get to see us too much."
