Emerging defender Matt Roberts has extended his time in the red and white, signing a contract extension with the Sydney Swans, keeping him at the club until at least the end of 2027.
The 20-year-old was already locked in with the Swans until the end of 2025, but in a show of faith has extended for a further two seasons.
The left-footer was originally drafted from South Adelaide with pick 34 in the 2021 draft and has gone onto play 19 AFL games, including 12 this season, after a fantastic summer of hard work.
“I’m only early in my footy career, but I’m extremely grateful to the club for showing faith in me for a further couple of years,” Roberts said.
“I love this place and I love coming here to train every day and I feel we are in a good spot to get some success as a group in the next few years. I can’t wait to get stuck in.”
Roberts has predominantly played across half back this season but has the ability to push into the midfield as his game develops.
Sydney Swans Executive General Manager Football – AFL, Leon Cameron, said the club is thrilled to have secured Roberts for a further two seasons.
“Matt is a very humble and popular member of the group, and we feel he is an important player for us going forward,” Cameron said.
“He has had a great start to this season, putting together some really nice games in defence, and as he develops further, I think he has the tools to become a really good AFL footballer.
“We’re thrilled Matt has committed to the club for the long term, and we’re excited to watch his development."
