Sydney Swans Head of List Strategy, Chris Keane has spoken to AFL Trade Radio during the Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period on Friday 11 October, 2024.
The Swans list boss spoke to Cal Twomey and Riley Beveridge on Friday afternoon and outlined the clubs’ plan for the week.
Swans veteran Luke Parker formally requested a trade to North Melbourne a fortnight ago, and Keane said the club is in conversations with the Kangaroos about getting ample compensation.
“Those discussions are ongoing with North Melbourne. We will try to negotiate in good faith, but we need to strike a balance between the player and us as a football club,” Keane said.
“Ultimately, when you have a contracted player, it needs to represent the value we place on Luke.”
The Swans were aggressive in last year’s Trade Period, acquiring Brodie Grundy, Taylor Adams, James Jordon and Joel Hamling, but Keane said the club’s primary role this year was to retain the talent already on the list.
“I think we’re exploring a lot of out of contract players to make our list better, however, our priority was to retain key young talent which we have been able to do, so that’s really exciting,” Keane said.
“From a list acquisition point of view, we will go to the draft.”
The Swans currently hold picks 19 and 22 for Novembers AFL Draft, but Keane was asked if the club was open to shuffling the picks around the move up the draft order.
“We think it’s an exciting part of the draft to be sitting at,” Keane said.
“The beauty of having picks in those range is we have a level of flexibility. We will continue to explore moving up and back, and we will weigh up a few different things, but if it doesn’t eventuate were comfortable with 19 and 22 at this stage.”
The Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period concludes on Wednesday, 16th October.
