Swans Media takes a look at the Sydney Swans’ best 10 goals of season 2019.
10. Isaac Heeney, Round 19
Isaac Heeney pulled out the trick bag at the SCG in Round 19, threading a banana from the right-forward pocket late in Sydney’s clash with Geelong. Channel 7 commentator Luke Darcy was in awe: “Hugged up against the boundary, getting pressure from Ablett – and that is one of the goals of the year! Just to have the calmness – and he laid it on the boot for a banana.”
9. Jordan Dawson, Round 17
The SCG may not have seen a cleaner strike since the 2018-2019 Big Bash League season. Early in Sydney’s match against Carlton in Round 17, Jordan Dawson collected a Colin O’Riordan handball in the centre square and – off a matter of stuttering steps – goaled off a 60-metre bomb.
8. Zak Jones, Round 16
Zak Jones was at his explosive best in the Swans’ clash with the Bombers at the MCG in Round 16. The speedster latched on to the footy in the centre square, fooled Michael Hurley with a dummy, bounced the footy and drilled it home from just inside 50.
7. Jordan Dawson, Round 4
Dawson jagged a brilliant snap goal as the Swans tackled the Demons at the SCG in Round 4, pouncing on the Sherrin at a stoppage deep in the forward line and slamming the footy on his right boot.
6. Lance Franklin, Round 12
The 36,640 supporters who swarmed to the SCG for Round 12 – those in Sydney’s coaches’ box included – got a massive thrill out of a post-siren Lance Franklin special. All eyes were on the four-time Coleman medallist as he strode in from beyond the commentary-wing boundary, unloaded from 48 metres out and sent the footy fizzing between the sticks. A fairy-tale end to a 45-point triumph over the reigning premier.

5. Tom Papley, Round 7
Tom Papley exercised the precision of a surgeon on the Swans’ trip to the Gabba in Round 7, swooping on the footy in the right-forward pocket and caressing the Sherrin through on a near-impossible angle. Brisbane great and Fox Footy commentator Jonathan Brown dubbed him “the energizer bunny”.
4. Tom Papley, Round 9
The bunny was bursting with energy as the Swans met the Roos in Hobart in Round 9. Papley beat Marley Williams to the footy in the left-forward pocket, kept the Sherrin alive with some clever juggling and eventually soccered the ball through from the goal square.
3. Jordan Dawson, Round 19
In one of the most unique goals of season 2019, Dawson sold three dummies to three Cats at the SCG in Round 19, setting himself up for a simple shot on the run.
2. Lance Franklin, Round 2
As he’s done so many times in his six years in red and white, Franklin treated the SCG Members Pavilion to a spellbinding goal against Adelaide in Round 2. The seventh-greatest goal-kicker in the game’s history steered the footy home with deft touch from just outside the junction of the 50-metre arc and left-side boundary.
1. Tom Papley, Round 7
Papley’s trademark hunger was on display as the Swans met the Lions at the Gabba in Round 7. The 23-year-old was at his scrambling best as he fought Noah Answerth for a ground ball, and after eventually taking possession inside 50, he snapped a well-deserved goal.
