Two Sydney Swans are set to win new awards named in honour of the revered Adam Goodes and Peter Bedford at the 2019 Club Champion Dinner on Tuesday night.
Second place in the medal count will be presented the Adam Goodes Trophy and third place the Peter Bedford Trophy at the club’s night of nights at The Star Event Centre.
Goodes played a club-record 372 AFL games between 1999 and 2015 and finished his career with two premierships, two Brownlow medals, four All Australian selections, three Bob Skilton medals and the 1999 AFL Rising Star award.
The Sydney great is also a member of the AFL Indigenous Team of the Century, co-captained the club in the years spanning 2009-2012, is a Swans Life Member and is one of just eight Bloods Legends.
Bedford played 178 VFL games in the years spanning 1968-1976, claiming a Brownlow Medal, collecting five Club Champion honours and topping the club’s goal-kicking on three occasions.
He is also a Bloods Legend, a member of the Swans Team of the Century, a Swans Life Member and an Australian Football Hall of Fame inductee, while he captained the club between 1973 and 1976.
Goodes says winning the runner-up award is an enormous achievement.
"To finish runner-up in the Club Champion award takes a lot of grit, determination and consistency over the course of the season," Goodes said.
"I feel honoured and humbled that the award has been named after me, and I hope whoever wins the runner-up award this year takes the time to reflect on the tremendous season they've had.
"Unfortunately I won't be there this year, however it's always a wonderful night and I would like to congratulating all the winners."
Bedford said he considered it an immense privilege to have the award for third place named in tribute to him.
"It's an unbelievable honour," Bedford said.
"When you play you don't expect these things; you just try to do your best as a player. So when Tom Harley rang me to say the club had deemed they'd like to name the award in my name I felt absolutely honoured. When you think of all the players who have represented the club and to be honoured in such a manner is an unbelievable thrill."
The player crowned Club Champion will take home the prestigious Bob Skilton Medal.
