The Sydney Swans have finalised their playing list for the 2019 season after signing three footballers at the Rookie Draft on Friday.

Peel Thunder product Durak Tucker, the Sandringham Dragons’ Harry Reynolds and QBE Sydney Swans Academy graduate Sam Wicks were all brought on board at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne.

General Manager – Recruiting and List Strategy Kinnear Beatson said the Swans had a clear plan in mind and were rapt to kick off the Rookie Draft by nabbing Tucker, a defender secured via pick 12.

“We were keen to use the Rookie Draft picks to try to bolster our key-position or medium-type players,” Beatson told SwansTV.

“Durak is a quick defender with good closing speed, he’s a very competitive young man and he was really excited with the news that we drafted him. John was talking to him before and he was in tears, the young guy.

“It’s his competitiveness, ability to close on an opponent and of course versatility that we really like.”

The signature of Tucker was followed by that of Reynolds, a defender secured through pick 28.

Beatson said his ability to cover a wide range of positions grabbed the recruitment team’s attention.

“We’ve seen Harry play back, forward and midfield and for that reason we were keen to add him to our group,” Beatson said.

“He’s just got so much versatility. He’s very raw so he’ll have plenty to learn but we like his competitiveness and athleticism.”

Sydney rounded out the Rookie Draft through the signing of small forward Wicks.

The 19-year-old, who’s made a name for himself in the NEAFL over the last couple of seasons, signed with the Swans as a Category B Rookie after being denied at last year’s National and Rookie Drafts.

Beatson says Wicks’ journey is one of perseverance and is confident he’ll make an impact at the Swans.

“Sam’s a great story. He’s another 19-year-old who’s just taken a bit of time to blossom,” Beatson said.

“He’s a small forward with really clean hands, good disposal and he’s quite uncanny around goal with his ability to work into space. If he’s not kicking them he’s setting them up.”

The National and Rookie Drafts both rounded to a close over Thursday and Friday.

The Swans signed Nick Blakey, James Rowbottom, Justin McInerney and Zac Foot at the National Draft, before Tucker, Reynolds and Wicks put pen to paper as rookies.

Sydney’s draftees will join the rest of the squad for pre-season training on Monday.
