Mick Malthouse will present the Jock McHale Medal to the winning premiership coach on 2017,  while North Melbourne champion Brent Harvey will be the premiership cup ambassador.

As has previously been revealed, James Hird will present the Norm Smith Medal.

Malthouse coached West Coast to two flags (1992 and 1994) and Collingwood to one (2010), but he expressed hope Richmond could win its first flag since 1980.

A tough defender, Malthouse lined up in 121 matches for Richmond, with his other 53 games as a player at St Kilda.

"Any club that you've bled (for), (suffered) broken bones and probably broken bones, you have a soft spot for," Malthouse said at the MCG on Monday.

"Every club I've been to, and I've been at a lot, have got a special place.

"I think everyone's got a chance, but of course they've got a double chance. It's fantastic for the Tigers. It's great for their supporters, great for their football club, great for those that believed in the system that they had there."

Harvey played an AFL-record 432 games, all for North Melbourne. With the Kangaroos not taking part in September action, West Coast and Sydney are two of the teams he will follow.

"Definitely a soft spot for Drew Petrie playing at the West Coast Eagles. Obviously Adam Simpson's there, Daniel Pratt, Brady Rawlings, so I've got a pretty good contingent of North Melbourne people at the West Coast Eagles, and it would be a bit of a fairy tale for Drew to finish on a premiership. I'd love to see that," Harvey said.

"Also at the Sydney Swans, two ex-teammates John Longmire and Johnny Blakey are up there as well."

Hird was awarded the Norm Smith in 2000 when he captained Essendon to a flag against Melbourne, and this year was his turn to present the medal.

There was some surprise when it was revealed earlier in the year that Hird was asked to take part on Grand Final day, given his involvement as coach during the Essendon drugs scandal.

"I think it's fantastic that he's coming back and presenting the medal," Harvey said.

"The AFL are sticking to their plan of past winners coming to present it. He was next in line, so I wouldn't see why that he wouldn't get that opportunity.

"Very pleased that he's taking that opportunity to do so."
