Sydney Swans coach John Longmire spoke to the media at the SCG on Tuesday morning as the side rides high from a Round 1 win over West Coast.
The Swans are preparing for a home clash with the Port Adelaide Power on Sunday.
Here are some key quotes from the press conference:
The challenge Port poses
“They’re a very talented team. They had about 11 players who had played more than 100 games on the weekend. They’ve got one of the most talented, if not the most talented, list with the most depth in the competition at the moment. The way they recruited over the summer was very much trying to get experienced players in and they’ve got young players developing underneath too. If you look at their depth and talent they’re right up there with the best in the competition. We saw them play on the weekend and they played a superb game with all those recruits playing really well. It’s going to be a really tough game.”
Will Sam Reid meet Port?
“Sam’s going well at the moment. He’s due to run tomorrow. He won’t be training but he’s due to run more. He ran late last week, ran on the weekend, yesterday, again tomorrow. He’ll be upping the program. We’ll make a decision on him later in the week depending on how he goes in our final training session.”
Dan Hannebery’s selection chances
“Hannebery played for the NEAFL on Friday night and got through and pulled up really well. We’ve just got to make a decision whether he’s done enough to play seniors this week. If he gets through training he’s certainly in the frame.”
Is Gary Rohan in the mix?
“With Gary we will wait and see. He’s been training and is fit and ready to go so we’ll see how the week pans out.”
Whether Port will target Buddy
“I don’t think he sneaks under anyone’s radar. He’s part of a lot of oppositions clubs’ planning and he’s had to deal with that his whole career. Isaac Heeney was a really important player for us up forward on the weekend. He contested hard both in the air and on the ground. We think we’ve still got a few options in our front half to be able to kick a winning score and put pressure on the opposition.”
George Hewett’s 50th game
“He’s probably an underrated player. He goes under the radar a fair bit, but he’s highly valued inside the footy club. He’s hard, he’s a quality AFL midfielder, he’s quite big for an AFL midfielder, so he’s able to get in and use his size to advantage, and he’s a very efficient and effective forward. He had a few shots at goal on the weekend and if he had kicked straight he probably could have come home with three goals. He’s good overhead and he was good on the weekend. Since he came into the team he’s pretty much stayed there. You need him to play consistent footy and he delivers every week.”
