Sydney Swans midfielder Kieren Jack has been given the go ahead to play in Saturday’s season opener against Port Adelaide.

Jack has been under an injury cloud but did enough during Thursday’s final two-hour training session to convince the coaches he’s ready to run out onto the SCG against the Power.

The 29-year-old didn’t play in this year’s JLT Community Series. He was rested ahead of the first game in Coffs Harbour before missing the following two games against GWS and St Kilda due to a hip complaint, meaning the only four-quarter hit-out he’s played was February’s intra-club.

Senior coach John Longmire dismissed any lingering concerns about his former skipper’s health in this week’s Centrum Team Selection.

“He (Kieren Jack) ran really hard and did all that was required of him, and has done for the past week,” Longmire explained.

“We really just needed him to tick the box of training really hard today. He got through it fine and pulled up well so he’ll be right.”

Jack’s leadership and pressure will be a welcome addition to a side lacking Jarrad McVeigh (calf) and blooding first-year draftee Oliver Florent.

Florent earned an immediate debut against Port Adelaide after an impressive display in the pre-season series. The teenager kicked two goals in his first game against North Melbourne and averaged 13 disposals across the three matches.

Longmire said the silky forward, who’s debut game was announced in front of teammates ahead of training this week, had earned his opportunity.

“It’s fantastic for Ollie to (be picked) so quickly,” he added.

“He was our first-round pick, obviously, so we knew he had talent, and we thought physically he had a bit of work to do.

“But he’s done that over the summer and he’s bought into what we want to do and how we want to play.”

Saturday’s clash will mark Longmire’s 150th match as senior coach and Josh Kennedy’s first as captain.

The Sydney Swans hold the wood over Port Adelaide, having won the past five matches. At the SCG, the home side boasts an impeccable record having won 11 of 14 encounters.

Longmire’s men last accounted for the Power by 67 points in Round 20 last season.
