Preparing for a move into the middle this season has led Isaac Heeney to seek the advice and guidance from one of the competition’s best midfielders.
Heeney made the decision at the start of the pre-season to shadow newly appointed captain Josh Kennedy throughout the pre-season to further enhance his craft.
After spending time through the midfield during the finals series it is expected the 20-year-old will be called upon to help in filling the void left by the departure of Tom Mitchell.
Heeney said he had jumped at the opportunity to learn from his skipper throughout the last few months.
“This pre-season I have trained a bit in the midfield so I have just stuck to Josh Kennedy like glue,” Heeney said.
“He is seriously strong, a freak player and respected by all so I made the decision to stick to him.
“I feel like I belong in the midfield but obviously I am happy to play wherever the coach puts me.”
Heeney was one of the best on ground during last Friday’s intra club match at Henson Park as he played majority of the contest through the midfield.
“I think it was about 40 degrees with no wind and by half time we were cooked,” he said.
“We eventually got through it and no one fell which was promising but it felt like you were running on a treadmill.”
He will join his teammates in Coffs Harbour this weekend for the opening JLT Community Series match against North Melbourne at C.ex Coffs International Stadium.
“We love getting up to Coffs and we get a bit of free time up there to play a bit of golf at Bonville Golf Course who are very accommodating,” Heeney said.
“Coffs Harbour is very much like Newcastle in that it is a lot more chilled out than Sydney and so we love it.”
“The boys get out and have a swim every morning and have good fun up there.”
