Swans forward Kurt Tippett described the crowd’s standing ovation in the third quarter on Saturday as “uplifting”, with the off-the-cuff tribute to Adam Goodes inspiring the Swans towards the 52-point win over Adelaide.
Tippett, speaking at the team’s recovery session on Sunday, was out on the ground when a majority of the 38,690 supporters inside the SCG suddenly stood as one and clapped at the seventh minute of the third quarter as a mark of respect for the dual Brownlow Medallist.
Goodes was a notable absentee from last weekend’s side, granted personal leave due to the ongoing booing saga which both divided and united opinions throughout the football community and Australia.
Goodes may not have witnessed the win in the flesh but his spirit was certainly felt, especially at that moment in the game with the time representing the Swans champ’s number (3rd quarter, 7th minute = 37).
“I had no sense of warning that was going to happen,” Tippett said. “We certainly felt it and lifted when it did. The hairs stood up on the back of the neck…it was a good feeling.”
Tippett felt an energy well before the united tribute, an energy driven by the overwhelming support shown by the crowd and the players who wanted to support a teammate “hurting and struggling” personally.
From customised signs with messages to personalised red and white footy jumpers – the number 37 was plastered everywhere in support of ‘Goodesy’ whose return is yet to be determined.
All eyes will be on the Club to see whether Goodes will be available for the Swans’ Round 19 clash with Geelong at Skilled Stadium.
“It affects the playing group seeing a teammate go through something like this,” Tippett said. “The way we came together, we wanted to play for Goodesy and to make him proud – hopefully we did that.”
Tippett, who made a swift recovery from a fractured hand to play in the Swans’ 12th win of the season, played arguably his best match for the red and white.
The forward slash pinch hitting ruckman gathered 19 disposals, 25 hit outs and booted three goals in his first game against his former side in the Crows.
"It was bittersweet against the old side but happy to put in a strong performance," Tippett said.
