Sydney Swans coach John Longmire has called on the red-and-white faithful to flock to the SCG on Saturday afternoon for the clash with the Gold Coast Suns.
The Swans will be on the hunt for back-to-back wins in their only Saturday afternoon home game of the regular season.
“We’re really keen for as many Swans supporters as possible to get to the SCG and enjoy the 2:10pm start,” Longmire said.
“It’s a great opportunity for families. They can do what they need to do in the morning, come to the football in the afternoon and enjoy the game.
“Hopefully it’s a really high-pressure, quality game and then you get home at a reasonable hour. It’s a great time slot for families and we want as many families as we can possibly get here at the footy.”
A flood of fans is crucial to the Swans as they continue to jostle with a host of other teams wedged in a mid-table logjam.
Sydney escaped with a thrilling six-point win over North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Sunday to re-enter the top four.
But fourth-placed Sydney and fifth-placed Port Adelaide are locked on 44 points, while Melbourne (40 points) is snapping at their heels.
GWS (seventh), Geelong (eighth), North Melbourne (ninth), Hawthorn (10th), Adelaide (11th) and Essendon (12th) all remain in contention for a finals berth, and the fight for a spot in the top eight will only continue to heat up as September draws near.
But as discussion of finals action continues to bubble, the Swans have their sights firmly fixed on Saturday’s date with the Suns.
Former Swans assistant coach and current Suns mentor Stuart Dew will return to the SCG for the first time since departing Sydney at the end of last season, although Longmire says the homecoming won’t sidetrack his troops.
“Stuart is fortunate that he’s got Mark Evans, Gold Coast’s chief executive, who’s a very experienced football person up there with him,” Longmire said.
“I’m sure the Suns are on top of what they need to do and are learning a lot.
“But this week is definitely about us trying to beat the Gold Coast Suns and that’s what we’ll focus on.”
