Swans defender Zak Jones will be a prominent name at next week’s Match Committee following a dominant performance in Friday’s NEAFL win over Gold Coast.
Jones, playing across half-back in the SCG curtain-raiser, collected a team-high 31 disposals in the Swans’ come-from-behind 10.7 (67) to 8.8 (56) triumph.
Jones, who has managed six senior games this season before his omission on Thursday, will be considered for an immediate recall alongside forward Dean Towers who finished with 29 possessions and two goals.
Both players are potential replacements for Luke Parker and Jeremy Laidler who suffered respective injuries in the Swans’ win against Collingwood on Friday night.
Parker suffered a suspected broken ankle in the final quarter while Laidler was subbed out at half-time with a hamstring strain.
Jones and Towers spearheaded the Swans’ win in which the home side pegged back a 18-point deficit at half-time.
Conceding five goals to two in the second quarter, the home side lifted after the main break to boot seven goals to two in the second half to move to fourth spot on the ladder with an 11-5 record.
Nic Newman and Lloyd Perris (29 possessions apiece) were also impressive with Perris proving instrumental when the game was on the line in the final term.
Toby Nankervis (17 possessions and a goal) and Tom Derickx (14 possessions) shared the ruck duties against experienced Suns ruckman Zac Smith while Xavier Richards, Harry Marsh and Aliir Aliir held up well in defence.
Fellow defender Lewis Melican made a successful comeback from injury, playing managed game time, while it was also a good afternoon for Jackson Kelly.
The son of Swans great Paul, Jackson Kelly kicked two goals including his first on the eve of half-time in which the talent was swarmed and congratulated by teammates.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing, however, with the injury curse hitting Daniel Robinson during the early stages of the match.
Robinson hirt his collarbone and is in doubt for next weekend's AFL curtain-raiser against UWS Giants at Spotless Stadium on Saturday.
