Sydney Swans speedster Harry Cunningham is looking to launch into 2019 off the back of arguably the most impressive campaign of his career.
The 25-year-old played every AFL match in 2018, notched a century of games, continued to thrive in his evolution as a midfielder and took out the Swans’ Best Clubman award.
Cunningham has now set his sights on logging a high-quality pre-season in pursuit of another starring season.
“Last year was a consistent year for myself and I now want to put in a strong pre-season,” Cunningham told SwansTV.
“It really sets you up for a good season if you can bank as many sessions as possible in the pre-season.
“My focus is not only on my own game but the team – I want to help out my teammates and share a bit of knowledge.”
Assistant coach Brett Kirk recently said Cunningham was one of a host of players potentially set to take on more minutes in the midfield in 2019.
Cunningham, Callum Mills, Isaac Heeney, Oliver Florent and Tom Papley are just some of the troops who could add depth to the midfield brigade, headlined by bullocking duo Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker.
Cunningham says the midfield is where he’s best suited.
“I love playing in the midfield and on the wing,” Cunningham said.
“I find that’s my best position because I can bring my strengths, which are my speed and work rate, to be able to get back and go forward. That’s where I’m working alongside the guys on the inside doing the dirty work.”
The Swans returned to the pre-season slog on Monday after a three-week break over the Christmas period, and they again hit the track at Moore Park’s Bat and Ball Oval on Friday.
Cunningham said the Swans had powered their way through another complete session.
“That’s another pretty solid session in the bank now,” Cunningham said.
“It’s been good to get back into it after a little break. It was a hot session today, which was good.
“We did a bit of everything. We focused on some skills work early and then a bit of stoppage work around the middle and then a bit of match simulation and transition stuff towards the end.
“We’re getting into that match simulation as early as we can to prepare ourselves for the pre-season stuff and Round 1.
“There was a bit of tackling in there too, so we were getting stuck in to a bit of body contact and then a bit of power endurance with our weights coach. I’m a bit itchy after that session but feeling pretty good.”
