Lance Franklin’s seven-goal haul was hard to look past when the votes were handed out for this year’s AFL Coaches Association Player of the Year Award.
Franklin’s impressive tally caught the attention of Swans coach John Longmire and Blues interim coach John Barker who awarded the full-forward 10 votes following the Swans’ dominant win.
Franklin, who had three goals in the first 10 minutes of the game, also finished with 22 disposals and seven marks to be judged the best on ground by the men in charge.
“He had the kicking boots on, particularly early,” Longmire said post-match.
“He has always been good both sides of the ball and for him to finish off his hard work and to kick so accurately was impressive…he was a critical player for us.”
Kieren Jack (6 votes), Dan Hannebery (5 votes), Lewis Jetta (5 votes), Tom Mitchell (3 votes) and Dane Rampe (1 vote) rounded out the leaderboard from the Round 9 clash at the SCG.
Thanks to his five votes, Hannebery remained within striking distance of overall leader Fremantle’s Nat Fyfe.
The top two players in this year’s award sit 27 votes apart with 14 rounds left of the home and away season while Josh Kennedy is hanging on to 9th spot on 29 votes in total.
