Sydney Swans coach John Longmire addressed the media at the SCG on Monday afternoon.

Sydney fell to a 24-point loss to Gold Coast at the SCG on Saturday and is now set to meet Essendon at Etihad Stadium on Friday night.

Here are some key quotes from the press conference.

Thoughts on the loss to Gold Coast

“There were a couple of elements we got right seven days ago, which were the emotional and technical parts of the game. But we didn’t get either of those right on the weekend. Those are key parts of the game. You need to be weighted in both of them. There’s no point doing it one week and not the next. The game demands you do it every week. The emotional side of it means being able to change the wide. There were some technical parts in the second quarter on Saturday that we could have got better. But you also need to win more of the big moments when you get the opportunity and take those opportunities. We able to do that the week before. It’s not as if we can’t do it but we didn’t do enough of it on the weekend.”

Responding against Essendon

“We’ve got to make sure we turn it around pretty quickly. We play Friday night this week, so with the six-day break you do the review and then you get into the next week pretty quickly. We’ll look back but we’ll have to look forward as well. You’ll look back on the disappointment we had on the weekend, but we have to make sure we look forward and use what we learned out of the weekend for this weekend against the Bombers.”

Heath Grundy playing in the NEAFL

“It’s a combination of Heath not having a match-up in the Gold Coast game and also wanting him to work on a few things. He had a couple of quiet games before we rested him. We’re working through a couple of those things and it’s a combination of that and match-ups."

Kieren Jack’s availability for the Essendon match

“Kieren’s a chance. He’s not ruled out. He’s probably the only one of the injured players looking to come back into the team. Kieren’s not over the line just yet. We’ll have to see how he goes on Wednesday. We’ll see how he trains. We’ll have to get all the information in front of us and see how he’s moving on Wednesday before we make a call on his availability for the Essendon game.”

Update on Gary Rohan’s fractured hand

“We don’t know the length of time Gary’s out for. He’s having an operation on his hand today. We’re not sure how many weeks that’ll be. We’re hoping it’s short-term. They can put a plate in it and turn it around fairly quickly. He did it in a spoiling contest and came off straight away. He went back on and tried to keep playing but it was too sore.”

Essendon’s strengths

“They play a hard, quick brand of footy. They can get some real bounce out of it and we understand what they delivered on the weekend was really strong footy. But everything’s done in balance. We need to look at what we do and what the opposition do and find the right balance.”
