With his no-frills football and team-first attitude, Jeremy Laidler has become a regular contributor for the Sydney Swans this season.
The former Blue, who had just 26 games to his name before arriving in Sydney, has played all but one match for the Swans in 2014 and has developed into an important cog in the club’s defensive unit.
Speaking after his first encounter with his former side on Saturday night, Laidler told SwansTV he was enjoying the simplicity of his role for the Swans this season.
“I feel good and I’m slowly starting to feel more comfortable down there,” Laidler said.
“I took a while to get going but I suppose the big thing up here (in Sydney) is if you play your role and do the team thing, you slot in pretty easily.
“You don’t have to go out and get 30 possessions or anything, you just do the team thing and what they want you to do and that’s how I’ve been getting a game.”
Laidler has slotted in the Swans’ back six with ease this season, with his laid back personality and positive attitude helping him become a popular team member at the Swans.
The 24-year-old, who has taken on a role similar to that of retired defender Marty Mattner, said the club’s defensive group including Ted Richards, Heath Grundy, Nick Malceski, Nick Smith, Dane Rampe and Rhyce Shaw have made him feel very welcome at the Swans.
“The (defenders) have been great for me,” he said.
“As soon as I got in there they had confidence in me and just wanted me to stick to the basics.
“I couldn’t be more grateful and I’m really enjoying my footy.”
The Swans' round 17 win over Carlton was a highlight for Laidler, who faced his former side for the first time since departing the Blues as delisted free agent at the end of the 2013 season.
The defender admitted he was a little nervous ahead of taking on his old team mates, but was thrilled to be able to come away with a big win.
“It was a good win against the old mob,” he said.
“It took us a bit to get going, but once we got going we’re pretty hard to play against and it was great to get a win against Carlton.
“There were a few nerves but there was excitement as well.
“There were a few little cheap ones (from his former team mates), but it’s all part of it really.”
The Swans will enjoy a short break away from the club this week, with the club drawing a bye this weekend.
Instead of heading away for the week, Laidler said he would take this opportunity to see more of the Harbour City.
“I’m going to be hanging around,” he said.
“I’m only new to Sydney so I’ll try to get out and explore.
“I love my golf, so I’ll try and get out on a few golf courses and just relax really.”
