Walsh tore all three hamstring muscles
Sydney Swans physiotherapist Matt Cameron tells SwansTV about the severity and surgery required on Tommy Walsh's hamstring injury
Speaking to SwansTV, club physiotherapist Matt Cameron described Walsh’s injury as severe and said scans had confirmed that the key forward will miss the rest of 2013.
“It was a pretty awkward movement in the end where his knee flicked straight and he bent forward at the same time,” Cameron said.
“It’s not unlike even a water-skiing type injury where all three of his hamstring muscles have torn and so he’s going to need surgery to reattach them to the origin of those muscles up underneath his backside.
“He’s going to have surgery on that this week and unfortunately that means really that the season is over for him and he’ll just be getting ready for next pre-season.”
Cameron also confirmed that Swans defender Rhyce Shaw has experienced another set-back after almost two months out with a lower abdominal injury.
“He was coming along quite well last week and trained with the team on the Tuesday but pulled up sore from that in the same area in the groin,” he said.
“Unfortunately that means he’s been tipped over and we’ve had to stop him training and running for the moment and we’re not really quite sure when he’ll be back training.
“We’ll have him running as soon as we can and then we’ll have an idea of when he’s going to train and play.”
Fellow Swans defender Marty Mattner will again face a fitness test this week after missing three matches with hip soreness.
“He’s got some hip problems that have prevented him from putting his hand up to play last week but he’s due to attempt training again this week,” Cameron said.
“His hip is feeling better but he won’t really know until he trains and then we’ll get a better idea of whether he’s able to play.”
In other injury news, Cameron said forward Sam Reid remained on track to return after the bye after tearing his quad against Collingwood in round nine.
“He’s a week down the track and everything is looking really good,” he said.
“We’ll start him running shortly and we’ll take him through the steps of the rehab and hopefully he’ll be right to go in that week.”
