Sydney Swans chief executive Andrew Ireland believes the biggest success story at the Club this season has been the development of key defender Aliir Aliir.
The 22-year-old has become a permanent fixture in the back half since making his debut in Round 6 against Brisbane.
Aliir has played 10 matches, averaging 15 disposals and five marks including every match since Round 16 to keep veteran defender Ted Richards out of the senior side.
Ireland said the development of Aliir had come at a very important stage for the Club.
“He has played really good football and settled in really well in that key defensive post,” Ireland said on SEN Radio.
“We were a bit worried with knowing that Ted was likely to be getting towards the end of his career so we brought young Michael Talia in who busted his foot in the first game.
“For a young player like Aliir to come in and take up one of those key defensive posts, which is a tough ask in the way that footy is played these days, has been really good for the team.”
The calmness of the young defender under pressure has been one of the most impressive attributes displayed throughout the 2016 season, according the Swans’ chief.
“The first couple of years you watch him play and sometimes it might have even looked like he was too casual,” he added.
“There is a fine line between casual and composed and I think his composure when using the ball has been something that has been very pleasing.
“The way that the game is played now coming off half-back you need to be able to defend really well but you also need to be able to use the ball well.”
