Tests for Tippett, McGlynn
Kurt Tippett and Ben McGlynn will both face tests ahead of the Sydney Derby, while the reserves will receive a boost
Both Tippett (knee) and McGlynn (thumb) have missed the last two matches with their respective injuries, but the pair could be in contention to return should they get through training this week.
Speaking to SwansTV for the HCF Injury Update, club assistant physiotherapist Tim Needham said the club was hopeful the pair would be fit to play this weekend.
“Kurt has been going quite well in rehab, so he’s a good chance to come back in this week,” he said.
“He’s just got to get through training, so we’ve got high hopes for him this week.
“Ben had a little fracture in his thumb and it’s actually improving quite well.
“He’s also a chance to come back in this week, but will need to get through training.”
Rhyce Shaw will miss two-to-three weeks after suffering an ankle injury in last Friday night’s win over Richmond at the MCG.
While there was initial concerns that Shaw’s injury was more serious, Needham confirmed that the running defender would only miss a handful of games with a syndesmosis injury.
“Rhyce went over on his ankle in the game and we thought he might have fractured his ankle,” he said.
“Fortunately, after having some scans, the news has been a bit better and he’s actually damaged his syndesmosis in his ankle, which is similar to Dan Hannebery’s injury but hopefully not as bad.”
Needham confirmed that Hannebery would begin his running program by the end of the week.
“Dan has been on crutches and keeping weight off his ankle,” he said.
“It’s coming along pretty well and we’re hopeful that he’ll be running by the end of the week into next week and then will continue that progression.”
Young Swans Tom Mitchell (ankle) and Dean Towers (fractured rib) will both face fitness tests after making significant improvements over the last week.
Needham said both players had progressed well and would likely line up for the Swans reserves this weekend.
“Tom hurt the ligaments on the inside of his ankle, but he’s been kicking all the goals in rehab and he’s been going quite well,” he said.
“He’s going to hopefully play this week, so he just needs to get through training in order to do that.
“Dean had a rib fracture, and he’s a similar story to Tommy in that he’s going to train this week and hopefully will play.”
In other injury news, Swans rookie Lloyd Perris’s season is over after the young midfielder ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in the Swans reserves practice match on Saturday.
“There’s bad news for Lloyd,” Needham said.
“Scans have shown that he’s ruptured his ACL in his knee.
“He’s considering his options at the moment, but will obviously have surgery and will be out for the season.”
