Fire up the Jetts
Lewis Jetta is hoping to bring his pace and goalscoring to Saturday's match against first-placed Port Adelaide
The 25-year-old, who contributed in last weekend’s 35-point win over the Suns with 18 possessions and two brilliant goals, is looking forward to the challenge of taking on the competition’s top side on the Swans’ home deck.
On the eve of Saturday’s blockbuster clash, Jetta told SwansTV that he felt he was getting better with each and every match, but believed his best was still to come.
“I’m feeling really good and the confidence is there,” he said.
“I kicked two goals last week and hopefully I can kick some more this week.
“I think for me to get back to my best, I just need to keep running and spreading hard, and that’s what I did last week and the week before, so if I’m able to do that again, then I should have a good year.”
Jetta captured the attention of Swans’ fans in 2012, when the then 23-year topped the club’s goal-kicking with 45 goals in a premiership year. His speed and finishing skills saw him make the 2012 All Australian squad of 40, but he narrowly missed out on selection in the final team.
Following what was a clear career-best season, injuries struck Jetta in 2013 with the midfielder missing 12 matches with an ongoing shin injury.
While a minor knee operation interrupted his pre-season campaign this year, Jetta said he finally felt fit and ready to rediscover his lightning speed and attacking flair.
“I think I’ve got plenty more in the tank,” Jetta said.
“It’s just about me choosing when to run and getting the right time.
“I’m pretty sure that I’ve got plenty left and it’s just about running the four quarters out.
“I’ve been having a couple of quiet patches between the second and third quarters, so if I can play four quarters of just running hard two-way then I should improve.”
Another area Jetta is keen to improve this season is his set shots for goal, after experiencing some inaccuracy in front of goal earlier in the season.
After dedicating extra time to that area of his game, Jetta said he now feels more confident when lining up both inside and outside the forward 50.
“Most of my goals have been on the run or snaps and my set-shots haven’t been great, and that’s what I’ve been practicing a lot,” he said.
“I feel if I get a set-shot now, I should be able to kick it.
“I’ve been practicing a lot before training and after training and even a bit extra on my days off, so I’m pretty confident that my set-shots have improved a lot.
“If I get the ball inside 50 or outside 50, I’m going to have a shot and back my long kicking.”
The Swans will be aiming to notch up their eighth straight win in Saturday’s match against the Power, in what is shaping up to be one of the biggest matches in Sydney this year.
With over 37,000 fans turning out for the round 11 clash with Geelong, Jetta urged even more fans to come to the SCG for Saturday’s match.
“It’s going to be a really good game,” he said.
“They’re on top of the ladder and we’re third, and they are two games clear.
“If we can get this place (the SCG) sold out, with everyone coming along whether it’s cold, raining or whatever, if everyone could just come out and support us it would be great.
“It’s going to be a massive game against the top team in Port Adelaide and we’re both good, hard-running sides and it’s going to be a cracking game.
“We’d appreciate it if all our supporters came out to support us.”
