Derickx out for 2-3 weeks
Ruckman Tom Derickx will miss two-to-three weeks with a hamstring injury, while others push for returns
The ruckman, who has played 12 games for the Swans this season, suffered the injury in the final training session leading up to the Swans’ round 17 clash with Carlton, where he was named as an emergency.
Speaking to SwansTV for the HCF Injury Update, club physiotherapist Matt Cameron confirmed that Derickx would be out for two-to-three weeks.
“Unfortunately in the training session before the Carlton game, Tom tore his hamstring,” he said.
“He’s already missed two weeks (over the bye), but he’s going to be out for another two-to-three weeks.”
Young midfielder Tom Mitchell will also be unavailable for selection this week after failing to pull up from a knee injury suffered a fortnight ago.
Cameron said Mitchell, who suffered a heavy knock during a training session, would require another week on the sidelines.
“Tom landed heavily on his knee two weeks ago and he’s still not able to run comfortably,” he said.
“We think he’s going to be at least another week.”
As reported earlier in the week, injured trio Kurt Tippett (knee), Rhyce Shaw (ankle) and Dan Hannebery (ankle) will all face fitness tests ahead of Saturday night’s clash with Hawthorn at the MCG.
“They are coming along,” Cameron said.
“Tippett was out there running and so was Rhyce with the team today, but Dan hasn’t gone out with the team yet, so he’s behind the two.
“We just need to see how they pull up from today and we’ll see how they cope with training on Thursday.”
First-year Swan Zak Jones will also need to prove his fitness this week after missing the club’s clash with the Blues with an Achilles injury.
“Jones got some Achilles soreness after the trip to Perth and he’s dealing with that at the moment,” Cameron said.
“He did do some training today, so we’re expecting him to play this week.”
In other injury news, three young Swans went under the knife over the bye week with Alex Johnson and Lloyd Perris undergoing knee reconstructions, while Aliir Aliir underwent a shoulder reconstruction.
Cameron confirmed that both Johnson, who endured his third reconstruction in two seasons, and Perris opted for LARS procedures.
“Alex had a LARS procedure,” he said.
“He had his surgery on Monday, so his rehab really starts in earnest now in the next day or two.
“He’ll be up and going after that.
“Lloyd had ruptured his cruciate ligament which he had repaired a couple of years ago when he had a traditional reco.
“This time he’s had a LARS reco and he’s going really well and is a week in front of Alex.”
Cameron said Aliir, who will miss the remainder of the season, will take some time away from the club over the next few weeks.
“Aliir had to have a shoulder reconstruction and he’s in his second week now,” he said.
“He’s going to have a bit of a layoff now and he’ll get started later in the home and away season."
