Bio 

Recruited from VFA club Port Melbourne, Bernie Evans made his debut in the red and white as a twenty year old in round one of the 1978 season. In the ensuing eight years, he played 148 games for the Swans, and was a member of the first team to represent the Club at an SCG home game in round one of 1982. A brilliant rover / half-forward, he won the Best and Fairest in 1984, and was named All-Australian the same year. After the relocation of the Club to Sydney, a job opportunity arose in Melbourne, which Bernie accepted – meaning he trained in Melbourne and effectively “commuted” every second weekend to play home games in Sydney. Prior to the 1986 season, incoming coach Tom Hafey passed an edict that all players were required to reside permanently in Sydney, forcing Bernie to make the difficult decision to leave the Swans. He continued his career at Carlton, where he played 37 games from 1986 to 1988.
