Sydney Swans ruckman Shane Mumford will miss three-to-four weeks after he suffered a fracture of his cheekbone in Saturday’s 77-point win over Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.

Mumford suffered the fracture in an incident with Crow Jared Petrenko, and will undergo surgery later this week to repair the damage.

Speaking to the media on Monday afternoon, Swans coach John Longmire said Mumford, who was just beginning to show his best form against the Crows, will be a big loss for his side.

“It's disappointing for him, he's probably just got going again and now he misses another slab of footy," Longmire said.

"Very rarely do you get a full squad absolutely fit, and that's just what happens in AFL footy.

"History suggests you need a good quality group of tall blokes to cover for each other if there's any injuries, and that's the case at the moment, and that's probably always the case with most teams."

One of the tall Swans who could come in to the side for the trip to Port Adelaide on Saturday week, is new recruit Kurt Tippett.

Tippett - who was traded to the Swans from the Adelaide Crows at the end of last year - has just completed an 11-match suspension for irregularities in his contract with Adelaide.

And unfortunately for the Swans, both senior and reserves sides have a bye this weekend and he'll have to sit out an extra week.

But Longmire said Tippett will be back on the field very soon, most likely in their next game against the Power in round 13.

"He's a big chance to play, but we'll confirm it next week," Longmire said.

"He's still got a couple of training sessions we want him to get through but he's been doing that pretty well over the last couple of weeks.

"We've still got to make sure it's the right call for him.

"We'll make that call next week ... we've still got to decide if he does play, how many minutes does he play."

Longmire says that while he would have preferred Tippett to have had some match practice in the reserves before making his comeback to the AFL, their tough training regime is the next best thing.

"In an ideal world it would have been good to get a game into him, but we're going to have some pretty solid training sessions this week so we'll replicate a match situation, which we usually do during a bye anyway," Longmire said.

"Sometimes it's as good as a match situation anyway, with pressure being applied all over the ground."
