Reserves fall to Suns in the wet
The Sydney Swans reserves suffered their second loss of the season, to the Gold Coast Suns reserves on Saturday
With the driving rain on the Gold Coast making it difficult to see down the ground at times, the young Swans reserves side took it up to a side containing AFL-experienced players such as Jared Brennan, Nathan Bock, Greg Broughton, Seb Tape and Karmichael Hunt.
The Suns were the better side over the first half, taking a 19-point lead to the main break. However, the Swans fought back early in the third quarter, and then again at the start of the last quarter, to have the scores tied at 49 points apiece with five minutes gone in the final term.
The home side steadied to kick the last three goals of the game to run-out 20 point winners and square the ledger with the Swans at one-and-one for the season.
Jed Lamb continued his fantastic 2013 form, leading the way for the visitors over the full four-quarters, with Jake Lloyd and Harry Cunningham, in just his second game back from a knee injury, also having an influence for the Swans.
Tim Membrey was the only multiple goalkicker for the Swans on the day with two to take his tally for the season to 17 goals from eight games.
The Gold Coast Suns reserves became the second Northern Conference side – and also the second AFL reserves side – to defeat the Swans reserves this season after the Brisbane Lions reserves were able to do the same at the SCG in round seven.
Similarly to the senior side, the Sydney Swans reserves will enjoy a bye this weekend, before travelling to Alice Springs on June 22 to face the NT Thunder, who were defeated by the UWS Giants last Saturday.
