Key talls to take on Demons
Sam Reid and Shane Mumford will return to face Melbourne at the MCG on Sunday
Mumford comes back into the team after missing two matches with a fractured cheekbone, while Reid will play his first game since he injured his quad in the Swans’ round nine win over Collingwood.
Making way for the pair this week is Jesse White, who will travel to Newcastle with the Swans reserves, and Xavier Richards, who will miss this week with a quad injury.
Swans coach John Longmire said he was pleased to welcome two senior players back into the team this week.
“It’s good to get a couple of quality players back into the team,” Longmire told SwansTV.
“Mummy has only missed a couple of weeks and while Sam has missed a few more, he’s certainly been doing a lot of running and a lot of conditioning work, so it’s good to get those two big blokes back in the team.”
Longmire said he was also looking forward to seeing Reid play alongside Kurt Tippett in the Swans’ forward line for the first time this week.
“It will be the first time they’ve play together,” he said.
“They’ve done a lot of training together during the week so they’re not complete strangers.
“We expect them to play in the same front half and hopefully give us some targets in our forward line.”
Looking ahead to Sunday’s match, Longmire said he had noticed some significant improvements in Melbourne’s game over the last fortnight, including the delivery into their forward half.
“They’ve certainly been running and carrying the ball and have been playing with some real flair and attack over the last couple of weeks,” he said.
“If you look at all their stats over the two-week period, they reached a real high and they are certainly playing with some speed and some run and carry.
“Their forward line last week was really potent and their talls up in the front half are really good players who can take a mark and can kick goals.”
Sunday’s match will also mark a significant milestone for midfielder Josh Kennedy, who will reach his 100th AFL game this weekend.
Longmire said the 25-year-old is one of the club’s most consistent performers since he arrived at the club three-and-a-half seasons ago.
“He’s been a wonderful player from the moment he’s come here,” he said.
“He’s kept improving every year and his biggest improvement has been that he is a consistent, quality AFL midfielder and week in, week out you know what you’re going to get with Josh.
“He enjoys playing in big games and he’s just a quality player and he’s now developed himself into a leader as well, so he’s an important player to our team.”
