Sydney Swans defender Rhyce Shaw will undergo LARS surgery after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during last Saturday’s clash with Geelong.

It was a cruel blow for Shaw, who had already missed 16 weeks this season with an abdominal injury suffered in round two.

Club physiotherapist Matt Cameron said the 31-year-old would undergo LARS surgery in Sydney this week, and would complete his rehab over the off-season in time for next year’s pre-season.

“He’s seeing the surgeon today (Tuesday) and it’s really devastating news for him with his season over with an anterior cruciate ligament rupture,” Cameron told SwansTV.

“It looks like he’ll be having a LARS procedure on his knee and that will allow him to spend the summer in rehab and figure early in the year next year.”

Meanwhile, Sam Reid looks unlikely to return in 2013 after the 21-year-old suffered another quad setback in training this week.

“Unfortunately he’s pulled up a little bit sore and it looks like he’s aggravated the scar tissue in his old strain site,” Cameron said.

“He’s now looking very much in doubt for getting up for the remainder of the season.”

Swans midfielder Dan Hannebery looks set to miss this Friday night’s clash with Hawthorn at ANZ Stadium after suffering a knock to the knee in Saturday’s loss to Geelong.

Cameron said the 22-year-old had suffered bone bruising from the incident.

“He is quite sore so we’re not all that hopeful and he looks likely to miss,” he said.

In other injury news, Lewis Jetta and Lewis Roberts-Thomson will both continue to train this week after showing positive signs over the weekend.

“The guy going the best is probably Lewis Jetta,” Cameron said.

“He’s done about three or four training sessions now and he’s coping well.

“He’s going to be training again tomorrow and we’ll see how he goes ahead of this weekend.

“Lewis Roberts-Thomson started training yesterday and he’s also pulled up well from that.”

Cameron also confirmed that Adam Goodes would resume running this week following a setback late last week.

“We stopped him running last week just because he was getting a little bit sore, so we’ve given him a little bit of time off,” he said.

“His knee is actually looking a lot better now and we’re hoping to get him going again this week.”
