Demons too strong for Swans Reserves
The Sydney Swans Reserves were defeated in Canberra this weekend...
Last year's second round draft pick Dan Hannebery was the best for the Swans, picking up 35 possessions in the midfield. Hannebery, who is currently completing year 12 studies and playing for Xavier College in Melbourne, flew up to play during his school holidays. He was drafted for his excellent skills and clean hands and was ranked first for endurance at the draft camp last year.
Tim Schmidt, who also played in the midfield, was among the team's best in his first game for the season after suffering a knee injury. Nick Malceski, on ball and half back, and Brendan Murphy at centre half back were also among the best on field.
Taylor Gilchrist opened the scoring for the Swans just two minutes into the game with a long, running goal from outside 50 metres. Their second goal came through Nathan Gordon after good play and a long pass from Hannebery. O’Keefe goaled twice before the end of the quarter to put the Swans in front by two points at the first break.
Eastlake kept the Swans goalless in the second term, kicking eight and leading by 47 points at half time. By the end of the third quarter, the Demons had extended their lead to 62 points with top-up player Gilbert kicking the Swans' only goal at the 14 minute mark of the quarter.
In the final term, goals by Pyke, Currie and Orreal were not enough for the Swans to overcome a dominant Eastlake side, and the team lost by 59 points.
The Swans Reserves will now meet Ainslie at the SCG on Sunday 5 July at 9.50am. The game is the curtain raiser for the Swans vs. North Melbourne game at 1.10pm.
