Sydney Swans coach John Longmire is confident the club has added two talented youngsters to the list at tonight's AFL National Draft.
The Swans manager, player personnel, Kinnear Beatson, didn't hesitate when he named West Australian Jordan Lockyer with selection 43.
"We rated Jordan very highly and were really pleased to get him with pick 43," Longmire said.
Lockyer was vice captain of the WA Under 18 team this year and Beatson and Longmire believe he has the right attitude to succeed.
The Swans then selected Alex Brown, who has just finished Year 12 in Melbourne, with pick 61.
Beatson said the club had targeted players with excellent skills and the boys, as well as father son selection, Tom Mitchell, fitted the mould.
"We've got a very good inside midfielder in Tommy, a tall defender type in Jordan and a utility/wingman in Alex," Beatson said.
Lockyer is friends with Mitchell, as they played together for WA the past three years, while Alex Brown and Alex Johnson - who was drafted to the Swans last year with pick 57 - are also former team mates at Oakleigh Chargers in Melbourne.
In summary
The Swans were low-key players in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft, with only one selection in the first round, the previously announced father-son pick Tom Mitchell at No.21. Nathan Gordon, who played two matches for the club last season, was also promoted to the senior list with pick No.85. That only left two other selections and they decided to grab Jordan Lockyer at No.43 and Alex Brown at No.61.
What the club said
"We just wanted to get the best players available at those picks. We went in with an open mind. We tried to trade for a few of our needs in Trade Week and then we came to the draft knowing we had Tommy there at 21. Kinnear Beatson and his recruiting team are confident we've got the best players available at 43 and 61." Sydney Swans coach John Longmire.
Pick 21: Tom Mitchell, Claremont
Longmire says: "He's just a quality midfielder. If he was in the draft, some clubs may have looked at him in the top 10 even. We think at pick 21 he's a fantastic get and has been a quality midfielder for a couple of years. We think he's going to be a good player."
Pick 43: Jordan Lockyer, West Perth
Longmire says: "We really like him. We watched him play and he's a really good kid with a strong pedigree. He knows footy and understands it."
Pick 61: Alex Brown, Oakleigh Chargers
Longmire says: "He's another player at that 191cm height who can play halfback or wing. It gives us some really good height and he can use the ball well and gives us some more flexibility."
Pick 85: Nathan Gordon, promoted rookie
Gordon gets elevated to the senior list after playing two senior games for the Swans last year. Gordon possesses an elite tank and a smooth set of hands and has been involved with the Swans since he joined the club on a NSW scholarship in 2008.
