Nine Sydney Swans players have been assigned new numbers as the team list has been finalised for the 2012 season.
Irish recruit Tommy Walsh, who joined the club from St Kilda during October’s Trade Week, will inherit the number 17 jumper which was previously worn by his fellow countryman, Tadhg Kennelly.
The recently retired Kennelly wore the number for 189 of his 197-game career, including the 2005 premiership, and asked Walsh to take it on for 2012.
Tony Armstrong and Mitch Morton, who also became Swans players courtesy of Trade Week, have been handed numbers 19 and 10, respectively. Armstrong will take over the number from 2011 retiree Daniel Bradshaw, and will continue the indigenous tradition of the number which was previously worn by Swans games record holder, Michael O’Loughlin.
Morton takes over the number 10 jumper made famous by Bloods legend Bob Pratt, and more recently Barry Mitchell and premiership player Paul Williams. Daniel Currie wore the number for the past three seasons before he was de-listed at the end of the 2011 season.
Tom Mitchell, the Swans first overall pick in November’s AFL Draft, will take over number 6 from retired premiership player, Craig Bolton. Bolton wore the number with distinction for the nine years he was on the Swans' list.
Fellow draftee Jordan Lockyer has assumed number 23 from Lewis Johnston, who was traded to Adelaide at the end of the season, while Alex Brown will share a locker next to co-captain Adam Goodes after being assigned number 36.
Of the Swans new rookies, Jack Lynch takes over number 42 from premiership player Paul Bevan, while Harry Cunningham will wear 44 and Shane Biggs number 46.
All players retained on the list from last season will wear the same number in 2012, including Campbell Heath who was re-drafted as a rookie following being de-listed at the end of the 2011 season.
