A host of school students from Sydney and the Northern Territory last month enjoyed a day to cherish at the SCG, touring Sydney Swans headquarters and meeting some of their favourite stars as part of an immersion program.
A number of students from Sydney’s Bronte Public School joined kids from the Northern Territory’s Yipirinya School, with the Indigenous Top End youngsters visiting the Swans as part of a seven-day trip.
The tour saw the students meet young Swans Tom McCartin, Darcy Cameron and James Bell, while they also got a glimpse of the coaches’ room, Paul Kelly race, the hallowed SCG turf and even the Swans’ five premiership cups.
Meredith Neeson from Yipirinya School said the Swans visit made for an enriching experience.
“The main lesson of the SCG tour is it takes perseverance to get to the top,” Neeson told Swans Media.
“Chatting to those young players in the coaches’ room was a big eye-opener for them. They’re actually not much older than some of our kids.
“If you want to get where you want to go you have to keep trying. You don’t just rise to the top – you have to put in the hard yards.
“It doesn’t have to be sport – it’s anything. There is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow if you work hard enough and that’s what we always try to instil in the kids.”
