Swans' unpredictable Jack-in-the-box
Kieren Jack tells sydneyswans.com.au the Swans need to have multiple avenues to goal which is why the mids are chipping in
GOALKICKING was the Swans' Achilles heel in 2011, but they appear to have found a solution this season, courtesy of their midfielders.
Lewis Jetta continued his stunning form in front of goal in Saturday night's 101-point annihilation of Melbourne, kicking three goals to take his club-leading tally to 17 this season.
Kieren Jack also kicked three, including the first two of the game, with Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker matching that tally.
With Ben McGlynn and debutant Tommy Walsh adding two, it was a solid spread of contributors as the Swans improved to 6-2 for the season.
With Adam Goodes injured and Sam Reid failing to fire in recent weeks, the impact of the midfielders has been vital for a Swans side that jumped 16 percentage points to a healthy 141.46 with the stroll past the Demons.
"I think we need it. We can't rely too heavily on our keys," Jack, who was widely adjudged best on ground, told sydneyswans.com.au.
"We've got young Sammy Reid and Tommy Walsh playing his first game, so we need to make sure we spread the load.
"We want to be unpredictable and with our mids going forward and being dangerous, I think that creates some questions for other teams, so it's a good position to be in."
Jack, the 2010 best and fairest, added an equal game-high 34 possessions and nine tackles to play a major hand in the Swans' comprehensive performance.
Stung by last week's defeat to Richmond, the Swans were after a fast start, and seven goals to nil certainly achieved that goal.
Melbourne failed to kick a goal until the 20th minute mark of the second quarter.
"The main thing we wanted to do was respond to the last couple of weeks," Jack said of the defeats to Richmond and Adelaide.
"Last week was embarrassing and we had to have a hard look at ourselves.
"The main thing was starting well and producing a four-quarter effort and to the boys' credit we were able to do it."
