Swans coach John Longmire said consistent pressure was key to yesterday’s win over the Hawks at Aurora Stadium.

Following the club’s 37-point win over Hawthorn, Longmire said he was confident it was his team’s four quarters of pressure that secured the club’s fifth win to start the season.

But while the coach was impressed with the team’s win, he said the Swans cannot afford to rest on their laurels.

“We’ve only played five weeks of footy and we’ve laid a really good foundation and have been able to play really good consistent pressure footy for those five weeks, but we know there’s a long way to go,” he said.

“We’re not a good team until we start to do it week in, week out, and we know we’ve done it for five weeks, but we’ve got a fair way to go.

“If we drop a little, the competition’s too close and we’ll get beaten, so we’ve got to continue that type of pressure footy.”

While Sunday’s win was a team effort, Longmire praised the performance of some of the club’s ‘underrated’ players, in particular Ted Richards who kept Hawthorn’s Buddy Franklin goalless for the match.

“(Ted Richards) has been a consistent player for us now, especially in the last year and a half,” he said.

“He’s been a good player for us ever since he arrived at the club, but particularly in the last couple of years down back.

“He’s probably under-rated, but that’s probably the way he likes it, and probably the way we like it.”

Longmire also commended veteran Jude Bolton’s ability to lead by example from start to finish in Sunday’s match.

“Jude’s second half was fantastic…but he was really important for us (in the first half),” he said.

“His first half was still important with what we needed to do from a forward perspective.

“(In the second half) I thought he really lifted as a number of players did.”

Longmire added that he was also impressed with Mark Seaby’s performance in the ruck in the absence of Shane Mumford, who has been sideline with a back injury

“We’ve been really pleased with the way Mark Seaby has come into the team and played that ruck role,” he said.

“He’s experienced, he’s able to really mix well with our midfielders, he knows that part of the ground really well and he pushed himself really hard in that last quarter when we had Lewis Roberts-Thomson off the ground.

“We just thought the way he was able to play the majority of that last quarter and play really well was a credit to him.”

After five consecutive wins, the Swans will now turn their attention to Saturday night’s round six clash with Adelaide at the SCG.

Longmire said the Crows are one of the in-form teams of the competition following on from their NAB Cup victory, so the team can’t afford to lower their guard heading into the weekend’s match.

“The reality is we play a team this week that have lost one game in 2012, including the NAB Cup,” he said.

“(Adelaide) are a much improved team as well and we need to make sure that we play really well against them this week.

“That’s what our focus is on and that’s all our focus will be on from the coaching staff right through to the players.

“We need to bring our pressure and our best footy for Adelaide this week.”
