An inspiring first half of football set up Swans forward Ryan O’Keefe for his best game of football this season.
O’Keefe, who had an injury interrupted start to the season, collected 21 disposals and kicked two goals in the Swans’ 37-point win over Hawthorn at Aurora Stadium yesterday.
Most impressively, O’Keefe was the teams’ leading possession getter at half time with 15 disposals and was a key target up forward the Swans, kicking two of the team’s five first half goals.
The forward said yesterday’s performance was the confidence building game he needed after a slow build-up to the season.
“I’ve missed a lot of footy and I’ve only played a couple of games, so slowly getting back into the groove was good and to get around the ball gave me a bit of confidence,” O’Keefe told SwansTV.
“I was lucky enough to be able to contribute my part for the team and hopefully it helped along the way to the victory.
“I’m hoping to build from that and keep improving as the season goes along.”
Following a disappointing first half, the Swans were able to produce a 57-point turnaround in the second half to run away with a six-goal victory over the Hawks.
O’Keefe said it was the Swans’ workmanlike execution of the team’s game plan which resulted in the Swans dominant second half performance.
“We knew we really didn’t have to do anything special, we just had to get back to the way we wanted to play and stick to our game plan and the boys did that,” he said.
“It wasn’t anything remarkable or special that we pulled out of the hat, we just knew what we had to do so it was about executing it.
“It was just about doing the job and playing the role.”
After Sunday’s win, O’Keefe said there was a good vibe around the club and a positive outlook for the season ahead.
“It was a really good win. We rate the Hawks as one of the top couple of sides, so to come away with a victory like we did is very pleasing,” he said.
“There’s a good belief amongst the club and amongst the team and at this stage it’s just been a matter of people coming into the team and just doing their bit playing their role.
“It’s just a really good place to be around, so we just need to make sure we keep on top of it and keep the momentum going.”
