KEY FORWARD Sam Reid trained strongly today but defender Heath Grundy did not make an appearance on the track as he tries to overcome a virus that kept him out of last Saturday’s game against Brisbane..

Grundy also missed the round six clash with Carlton with a virus and Longmire said the club would wait and see how he progresses.

"He's had it a few times, so we'll see how the week pans out with him," Longmire said.

"He was another one we were expecting to play last week.

"Those two players we'll obviously give as much time as we need to.

"It's just happened a couple of different times through the year."

If Grundy was unable to play, it would be a loss against a St Kilda side boasting tall targets Nick Riewoldt and Justin Koschitzke, as well as Zac Dawson, who was used up front to good effect against Carlton last week.

Reid had played every game this season before he missed last weekend's match with tightness in his calf.

Last time the Swans took on St Kilda, they powered to a 15-point win at ANZ Stadium that would have been far greater if not for a 10.23 return in front of goal.

But Longmire expects a very different contest at Etihad Stadium.

A virus struck the Saints the night before that round 22 clash, forcing Koschitzke and Dawson to miss the game.

Veteran ruckman Michael Gardiner also played his first match of the season in last week's win over Carlton.

"Their team will be different," Longmire said.

"But regardless we have to make sure we stick to what we know is right and that is consistent, trademark footy.

"If we can bring that, it gives us a chance at the end of the game."

Longmire had plenty of praise for some of St Kilda's key players, labelling small forward Stephen Milne "one of the best I've seen".

He also singled out "proven finals players" Nick Riewoldt, Brendon Goddard, Leigh Montagna, Nick Dal Santo and Adam Schneider.

The Swans boast some of their own match-winners, however, led by co-captain Adam Goodes.

Goodes has had a sensational second half of the year, leading to talk of a possible third Brownlow Medal.

"It's hard to disagree with most of what's being said about Adam's form," Longmire said.

"He's been fantastic.

"I've been lucky enough to see Adam over the years playing really good footy at different times and he's certainly playing some of his best footy at the present time.

"But what I've been really impressed with at the moment, he's been able to do it at really key points in games."

Ever the team man, Goodes had a typical response when asked about his Brownlow prospects.

"Hopefully we're still part of Grand Final week and we're looking forward to playing someone on Grand Final day," he said.
